Download Saturn Emulator free for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD - a modern Sega Saturn emulator built for accuracy, low input lag and broad game compatibility.
Free & open source · Windows · macOS · Linux · FreeBSD · v0.3.3
One emulator for the whole Saturn library
The Sega Saturn was one of the most complicated consoles of its era - dual SH-2 CPUs, the VDP1 and VDP2 video processors, SCSP audio, cartridge support, regional BIOS behaviour and a demanding CD subsystem. Saturn Emulator is designed around that difficulty instead of hiding from it, with accurate system behaviour and steady compatibility improvements.
The result is practical for everyday play and still deep enough for advanced users. It suits players who want clean controls and modern display options, collectors and preservation-minded users who care how the original hardware behaves, and developers and testers who want real tools to study the machine.
Everything you need to play the Saturn
Play from common disc images
Load Sega Saturn games straight from local disc images - no streaming, no bundled game packs and no third-party launchers. Supported formats cover the way most Saturn libraries are stored, so your existing dumps just work.
Automatic IPL BIOS detection
A Sega Saturn IPL BIOS is required. Drop your BIOS files into the ROM folder created on first launch and Saturn Emulator can pick the one that best matches the loaded game, so you spend less time on setup and more time playing.
Automatic region switching
Saturn games shipped across several regions. The emulator can switch region automatically to match the disc, which makes mixed North American, Japanese and European libraries far easier to use. The region can still be set manually when you need it.
Modern controls for a classic system
Play with up to two players and a variety of controllers on both Saturn ports. Keybindings are fully customizable, so it suits keyboard players, modern gamepads, arcade-style sticks and dedicated retro setups equally well.
Save management that respects the Saturn
Backup RAM, DRAM and ROM cartridges are all supported, with an integrated Backup Memory Manager that imports and exports saves and transfers data between internal memory and cartridge RAM. Saves are treated as a core feature, not an afterthought.
Rewind, turbo and frame stepping
Rewind up to one minute at 60 fps, speed through slow sections with turbo, and step forward or backward a frame at a time. These tools help with tough games, routing and any timing-sensitive moment you want to study or retry.
Low input lag fullscreen
Fullscreen mode supports variable refresh rate displays and low input lag, so action games, arcade ports, fighting games, shooters and rhythm-sensitive titles stay responsive on a modern monitor.
Enhancements and advanced tools
Optional deinterlaced or progressive rendering cleans up high-resolution modes, and transparent mesh polygons can replace the Saturn’s dithered transparency. For deeper needs there is optional low-level CD Block emulation and a work-in-progress debugger.
Which build should you choose?
Windows
Most Intel and AMD PCs use the x86-64 build. AVX2 is a little faster on supported CPUs; if it will not start, use the SSE2 build instead. ARM-based Windows PCs use the ARM64 build. Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable before running to avoid startup crashes.
Go to Windows downloadsmacOS
Choose Apple Silicon for M-series Macs and Intel for older x64 Macs. macOS 15 Sequoia or later is required. Because the app is ad-hoc signed, macOS may identify it as an unverified app and ask you to approve it before the first launch.
Go to macOS downloadsLinux
Pick the package that matches your CPU - x86-64 (AVX2 or SSE2) or AArch64 with NEON. The Ubuntu .tar.xz is the primary supported package; Flatpak builds may need filesystem permission before disc images load properly.
Go to Linux downloadsFreeBSD
FreeBSD users can install Saturn Emulator from the Ports Collection. Availability and packaging depend on your FreeBSD environment and package selection.
Go to FreeBSD downloadsGames that run well
Saturn Emulator is built for the messy reality of the Saturn catalog, not a narrow set of showcase titles. Public compatibility tracking now sits above 94%, including major releases, arcade ports, Japanese titles and FMV-heavy games. Popular titles people run include:

Quick start
Before downloading
Download for your OS
Choose the build that matches your operating system and CPU from the downloads above. There is no account, installer wrapper or bundled software.
Extract anywhere
Saturn Emulator does not require installation. Unzip the download into any folder you like and keep it there.
Run it once
Launch the executable a single time so it can create its profile and ROM folders on first start.
Add your Saturn BIOS
Place your Sega Saturn IPL BIOS ROM in the BIOS folder. The right BIOS is then selected automatically for most games.
Load a disc image
Open a Saturn game in CHD, BIN+CUE, IMG+CCD, MDF+MDS or ISO format. The matching BIOS and region are detected for you.
Configure to taste
Set up controllers, video output, fullscreen behaviour, save options and region preferences. Most defaults work well out of the box.
Start playing
Jump in, and reach for rewind, turbo speed and the Backup Memory Manager whenever you need them.
Accurate, responsive, and built to last
Accuracy-first development
Saturn emulation is a constant trade-off between speed, compatibility and hardware accuracy. Development focuses on better SH-2 behaviour, VDP1 and VDP2 fixes, CD Block improvements and save-state resilience, guided by real compatibility testing across difficult games.
Fast enough for modern play
Threaded audio, SH-2 optimizations, VDP2 renderer improvements and AVX2 (x86-64) and NEON (ARM) builds help demanding Saturn titles run smoothly. Recent work has improved graphics-heavy, CPU-heavy and audio-heavy games alike.
Save states, backup memory and rewind
Internal backup memory and cartridge RAM are first-class features. The Backup Memory Manager imports, exports and moves saves, save states stay forward-compatible across stable releases, and rewind gives you a one-minute safety net.
BIOS and games are not included
Saturn Emulator is an emulator. It does not include Sega Saturn games, BIOS files, CD Block ROMs or any copyrighted Sega system software. You provide those yourself from hardware and media you legally own.
For accurate, preservation-minded play, use clean disc images dumped from your own Saturn discs and a verified IPL BIOS from your own console.
